Nova Gas and Power can offer customers with a qualifying export meter to earn money through selling excess Electricity.
What is SEG?
The Smart Export Guarantee was setup by the Government, so that small scale generators can be paid for the energy they export. The SEG was created to replace the Feed in Tariff, which closed to new applicants in April 2019. The SEG is an obligation on larger suppliers, which allow customers to get paid for the excess renewable generated Electricity that they send back to the grid.
Why sell back to the grid?
- You get paid for the Electricity your business doesn’t use when sent back to the grid.
- You help create a greener future, through reducing carbon emissions supporting sustainability.
- You help in making renewable energy more reliable for everyone, creating a stable Electricity supply.
- Anaerobic Digestion
- Solar Photovoltaic
- Wind (Onshore Wind Turbine)
- Hydro Generation Station
- Micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
How do you apply for SEG payments from Nova Gas and Power?
Contact: hello@novagasandpower.com
What do you need to include within your application?
- Valid MCS or equivalent certificate
- Photo of your export meter
- If VAT Registered, completed self-billing form
- Be the owner of the generation unit
- Have a certified installation (MSC or equivalent)
- Have a half hourly export meter and have DA/DC appointed
- Not receiving FIT or SEG payment from any other supplier
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my Business receive both FIT and SEG payments?
Unfortunately, no. If your business has a Feed-in Tariff export currently, you can opt out and opt into the SEG export plan. Please check your FIT rates before opting out and compare them with SEG Tariffs to see what works best for you.
Please note, you can only opt out of FIT Export payments once every 12 months. If you switch from deemed to metered export payments under the FIT Scheme, then you cannot switch back – the change is permanent.
Can I have the SEG, if I have a co-located battery storage?
It doesn’t matter if your Electricity that you export comes from your renewable system or from your battery storage, you can still apply for a tariff and receive payments.
Can I change my installation setup?
You can add additional capacity to your renewable system, however anything over 5MW for solar photovoltaic, wind, hydro or anaerobic digestion installations or anything over 50kW for micro-CHP won’t be paid for.
Can I export an unlimited amount of Electricity?
Yes, you can export an unlimited amount of Electricity to the grid, but it cannot be more than the amount that your renewable energy system can generate – 5MW or 5kW for micro-CHP.
Do I have to have a specific meter to export Electricity?
To export Electricity back to the grid, you need to have either a smart meter (SMETS1 or SMETS2) or an export meter that’s capable of recording half-hourly.
If your energy usage is less than 30kW, then a smart meter would be the best option. If you use more than 30kW, then a HH export meter would be more suitable and we will need a copy of your MOP (Meter Operator Agreement) contract.

Scale relative to period max: 158.98 (Q4 2022)
- You can invest in high-quality insulation and double-glazed windows to cut down your consumption by 10%. Ceiling insulation can help keep the warmth in during the winter and keep the property cool during the summer. Loft insulation can also keep the property cool during the summer.
- Paint your roof with heat reflective paint. This helps reduce the amount of heat absorbed during the summer, putting less pressure on cooling devices.
- Consider installing solar panels. They will help bring down your monthly energy bill.
- If you’re a large facility, then look to invest in cogeneration energy systems, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP). They recover waste heat from on-site generators and transform it into water and space heating.
- Planting trees outside your property can help keep the building cool and provide shade. Trees can also purify the air, creating a much healthier environment for employees.
- By installing blinds on all windows, it will stop direct sunlight from entering and heating the building.
- To reduce running costs, look at shutting off unused areas within your premises.
- Always invest in better systems. When your machinery, equipment or system breaks down, look to invest in more energy-efficient alternatives.
- Use an automated system or inventory software to cut down your waste and overproduction of your business.
- If your business has automatic doors, setup their closing delay time helping to reduce the cold or hot air from escaping.
- Look at getting a green tariff when renewing your gas and electricity, to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Carry out audits to identify areas to reduce your energy needs.
- Have a clear sustainability policy in place.
- Use data analytics to pinpoint energy inefficiencies.
- Keep up with maintenance and inspections of your HVAC system.
- Invest in a smart thermostat to help regulate the temperature with minimal effort.
- Use natural airflow by opening the windows.
- If you use large commercial refrigerating units, consider using the energy-efficient units that operate at or below 60 kilowatts per ton.
- Integrate water side economisers into your HVAC to reduce your carbon footprint. A water side economiser uses the evaporative cooling capacity of a cooling tower to produce chilled water that can be used instead of your refrigeration units during cold periods, typically in the winter.
- Reduce the number of light fixtures and leverage natural light.
- Switch to energy efficient light bulbs.
- Consider using a power strip, to turn off all computer equipment when they are not in use.
- Switch off lights and equipment that you don’t use.
- By going paperless, not only helps the environment but it also streamlines operations, reduces admin time and reduces energy bills.
- Upgrade your water heater, then set the temperature to avoid unnecessarily heating water.
- If you have a few or more bathrooms, look to install automatic water saving taps, urinals and shower heads to prevent high water bills.
- If your business requires fleet vehicles, then look to invest to an all-electric fleet.
- Install more EV charging points at your premises.
- Teach your employees about sustainability and involve them to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Give back to the community, by letting them use the unused space so the energy usage isn’t going to waste.
