Our Future
One star has a power output of around 40 quadrillion kilowatt-hours per year and with 100-400 billion stars in the galaxy alone, that’s an unbelievable amount of power. Researchers say we’re around 10,000 years away from a solar system in space, that will soak up energy from the stars. The only solution is to replicate.
The National Ignition Facility in California, have been trying to produce the power of a star for over 70 years. By using a giant box of laser beams, they indirectly heat a small peppercorn sized atom filled with hydrogen, which causes the atom to implode. It is heated to around 3 million degrees Celsius and the burst of laser light lasts billions of a second, but the intensity will force the atom to turn from hydrogen to helium. The end result is to produce vast quantities of clean energy, requiring only a small amount of fuel and generating limited carbon emissions. In August 2021, NIF reported that they had reached approximately 70% of the way towards ignition. The future is fusion energy and Nova Gas & Power will support the introduction into the UK, when the solution is 100%.
